Druskininkai, the oldest and largest Lithuanian resort town, is situated 130 kilometres south of Vilnius and Kaunas and 40 kilometres from Grodno on the right bank of the River Nemunas. It is 90 m above the sea level. Today, Druskininkai occupies the area of 2241 ha and has a population of 21500. The town is surrounded by pinewoods on three sides within 90 km radius and thanks to the influence of the rivers Nemunas, Ratnyčėlė and surrounding lakes, the air ionisation is very high. The resort boasts an all-year-round mild and warm climate. The mean annual temperature is +7,5 C, in summer +18C, air humidity –70 %, prevailing winds are westerly and southwest. The air and water here is extremely clean due to absence of big industrial enterprises in the town. Within a radius of 8-10 kilometres of Druskininkai there are 12 of Lithuania’s cleanest lakes.
Druskininkai’s most valuable asset is its mineral water sources. The main curative factors in the resort are the mineral waters similar to those of the famous spa Baden-Baden (Germany); the mud which ranks among the best in Europe in terms of chemical composition and wonderful microclimate. Druskininkai curative mud of peat origin is a very effective curative matter for those with spine and joint problems.
Nine sources of mineral water are found in Druskininkai. Depth of the wells reaches 350 m.
The Lithuanian forest, which is abundant in mushrooms with numerous crystalline lakes, rivers and streams offer ideal conditions for rest and recreation.
